Spain, the three-time Olympic silver medalist and reigning European champion, rebounded from their opening loss to Australia by defeating Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Greek teammates 84-77 on Tuesday in the second round of Group A of the men's basketball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Both Spain and Greece, who qualified for Paris 2024 via the Olympic qualifiers, entered their match in Lille after losing their opening games to Australia (80-92) and Canada (79-86) respectively. Thus, they needed a win to bolster their chances of securing one of the top two spots in the group, which would ensure direct qualification to the quarterfinals. **Key Moments in the Major Clash** Santi Aldama (19 points with 11 rebounds) and Sergio Llull (13 points) were Spain's standout players. Giannis Antetokounmpo's 27 points and 11 rebounds couldn't prevent Greece's second consecutive loss. Greece initially had the upper hand, leading by 8 points (20-12) with two minutes left in the first quarter. However, Llull hit a three-pointer, followed by another in the last 11 seconds, reducing the gap to 21-22. The 36-year-old Llull continued his strong play in the second quarter, hitting another three-pointer to put Spain ahead 24-22. His veteran Real Madrid teammate, Rudy Fernández (39), added another three-pointer to extend Spain's lead to 33-27 halfway through the quarter. Spain created a decisive lead towards the end of the first half, scoring 13 unanswered points, including three three-pointers, to lead 49-35. Greece improved, narrowing the gap to 8 points (49-57) with about 4 minutes left in the third quarter. However, after Spain extended their lead to 13 points (62-49) with a three-pointer from Santi Aldama, Vassilis Toliopoulos responded with a three-pointer in the last two seconds to cut the deficit to 6 points (56-62). The game became more intense at the start of the fourth quarter, with Giannis reducing the gap to three points (59-62) with a basket and a free throw, and then to one point with a smooth move under the basket. Despite losing Rudy Fernández to injury, Spain kept their composure. Giannis tied the game at 71-71 with a spectacular basket in the final 4 minutes and 35 seconds. Lorenzo Brown's two free throws and a basket from Llull put Spain up by 6 points (77-71), and a highlight play from Aldama extended the lead to 8 points with two minutes remaining. The final score settled at 84-77 after two free throws by Willy Hernangómez and a basket by Alberto Díaz.
