Will Germany Fall Into the World Cup Trap Again?
Will Germany Fall Into the World Cup Trap Again?
After the historic triumph at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the German national team experienced a clear decline during the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, suffering shocking group-stage eliminations in two consecutive tournaments — something that very few football fans expected from “Die Mannschaft.”
Now, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, the big question remains: will Germany fall into the same trap once again, or will the team rise again and bring back the memories of 2014 on American soil?
What Happened to Germany at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar?
Germany’s disappointing exit from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was not as surprising as the collapse that happened in Russia 2018. The team entered the tournament with several technical and tactical problems, most notably the lack of attacking efficiency and defensive stability, in addition to the huge media pressure surrounding the squad throughout the competition.
The German team also entered the tournament amid controversies and issues outside football itself, which many observers believed negatively affected the players’ focus. Meanwhile, other national teams appeared far more concentrated and disciplined on the pitch, and Germany eventually paid the price for its mistakes by suffering another early group-stage exit for the second consecutive World Cup.
Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Germany enters the 2026 World Cup with major ambitions and is considered one of the top favorites to win the tournament alongside France, Argentina, Portugal, and Spain.
This time, the German national team appears far more focused on football itself, with a strong desire to restore its global reputation and win a fifth World Cup title. The atmosphere in the United States, Canada, and Mexico may also suit the team better compared to the experiences in Russia and Qatar.
Germany’s Group at the 2026 World Cup
Germany has been drawn into a group featuring Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.
On paper, the group may look manageable for the Germans, but reality could be very different. Ivory Coast and Ecuador both possess strong squads and international experience, making them capable of causing major surprises if Germany fails to approach the matches with enough focus and caution.
Germany will begin its campaign against Curaçao in what appears to be the perfect opportunity to secure three points and take an early lead in the group standings. After that, “Die Mannschaft” will face Ivory Coast in what could be the team’s first real test of the tournament.
Finally, Germany will take on the always-dangerous Ecuadorian side in a match that could either become a formality if qualification has already been secured, or a decisive and extremely difficult battle should Germany stumble in one of its opening matches.
The biggest question remains: has Germany truly learned from the painful lessons of Russia and Qatar, or will the nightmare of another early elimination return once again?
